AI assistants now answer a lot of the questions that used to send people to search results: “What’s the best CRM for a small agency?”, “Who are the top dental SEO companies?”, “Is Brand X any good?” If your brand isn’t in the answer, or a competitor is, you’d want to know.
AI visibility tools exist to tell you. They ask AI engines a set of questions on a schedule, record the answers, and report how often you’re mentioned, which of your pages get cited as sources, and who shows up instead.
What these tools actually measure
- Mentions: is your brand named in the answer?
- Citations: is your website one of the sources the answer links to? You can be cited without being recommended, and recommended without being cited.
- Share of voice: how often you appear compared with the competitors you track.
- Sentiment and positioning: how the answer describes you.
- Sources: which third-party sites the AI relies on for your category. This is often the most useful data, because it tells you where to get covered.
Two things to know before comparing prices:
- Prompts are the unit of cost. Most plans are priced by how many questions they track and how often. Fifty prompts tracked daily across three engines is a lot more data than fifteen tracked weekly.
- Collection methods differ. Some tools run prompts live through each engine’s consumer interface, some use APIs, and some search a database of previously recorded answers. Results vary between runs anyway, so watch trends rather than single snapshots.

The tools
1. SEOButler AI Visibility Check: best free first look
SEOButler’s free check asks for your brand name, website and, optionally, a topic your customers search for. It then searches a large index of recorded ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews answers (US, English). It shows three things: where your brand is named, which answers cite your website, and which other brands and sources appear for your topic. You can open the answers behind each number.
No email is needed to run it. Verifying an email gets you a shareable, unbranded report and three brand checks a month.
What it isn’t: a live tracker. It searches previously recorded answers rather than asking every AI model fresh questions, and the page says so plainly. A zero means no matching records, not that AI never mentions you. Use it to see whether you have a problem before paying for daily tracking.

2. Pace Generative: best if you want it done for you
Pace Generative is a generative engine optimisation (GEO) service rather than a self-serve tool. It tracks your visibility across the major AI engines, then does the work intended to change it: content written to be cited in AI answers, plus schema markup. Reporting covers citations, share of voice and competitor comparisons.
It’s sold as monthly packages, with pricing on request. It suits businesses that want results rather than another dashboard to check.

3. Peec AI: best all-round tracker for teams and agencies
Peec tracks prompts daily and is strong on source analytics. It classifies the sites AI cites (competitor, editorial, user-generated), shows citation share, and tracks sentiment and position against competitors. Every plan includes unlimited seats.
- Starter: $95/month, or $80 billed annually. 50 prompts and one project; you choose 3 of 6 engines (ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews, Copilot, Gemini, Naver AI).
- Pro: $245/month ($205 annual). 150 prompts and two projects.
- Advanced: $495/month ($420 annual). 350 prompts, five projects and Looker Studio.
- Agency plans: from $245/month, including white-label reporting.
- Add-ons: Perplexity and extra engines cost extra. API access is Enterprise-only.
4. Otterly.AI: best budget entry point
Otterly’s Lite plan is $29/month ($25 billed annually) for 15 prompts tracked daily across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot, with unlimited team members.
- Standard: $189/month ($160 annual). 100 prompts, plus a Looker Studio connector, API and MCP access.
- Add-ons: Google AI Mode, Gemini and Claude are paid on every plan, so budget for them if those engines matter to you.
5. Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit: best for Semrush users
Semrush’s standalone toolkit is $99/month per domain for 25 prompts tracked daily. It covers mentions across ChatGPT, Google’s AI results, Gemini and Perplexity, plus prompt research, competitor share of voice, a list of the media outlets AI cites, and an AI-readiness site audit.
Semrush also sells SEO + AI Search bundles from $199/month (50 prompts). Those are the better value if you need the SEO suite too.
6. Ahrefs Brand Radar: best for market-wide benchmarking
Ahrefs approaches this differently. Alongside tracking your own prompts, it offers an index of over 462 million prompts built from its keyword data. That lets you see your category’s AI landscape without writing a prompt list first.
- The index: $199/month per platform, or $699/month for all of them.
- Custom prompt packages: from $50/month (2,500 checks, roughly 80 prompts daily on one platform).
- Included prompts: Ahrefs plans from Lite ($129/month) upward include a few tracked AI prompts (5 on Lite).
7. Profound: best for enterprise depth
Profound is aimed at large brands. It offers prompt-volume research (what people actually ask AI engines), crawler traffic analytics, ChatGPT Shopping data and up to nine answer engines on Enterprise.
Brand plans are sales-led: a free 7-day trial with prompts Profound chooses, then custom Enterprise pricing. Agencies can start at $99/month plus $399/month per client workspace.
8. SE Visible (SE Ranking): best for SEO agencies that need white label
SE Visible is SE Ranking’s standalone AI tracker: from $99/month ($79 annual) for 200 prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Mode, Perplexity and AI Overviews. It says it collects answers through a real browser interface rather than an API. Agencies already on SE Ranking can add AI Search for $89/month, and the Agency Pack adds white-label reports.
9. Scrunch: best for how AI agents read your site
Scrunch’s Core plan is $250/month for 125 prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews and Copilot, with citation, sentiment and AI-bot traffic reporting. Its distinctive product is aimed at how AI agents read your site: it serves them an optimised version of your pages. API and Looker Studio are Enterprise-only.
A curious detail: when we loaded Scrunch’s pricing page as an AI crawler, it showed different plans and prices from the page people see. We’ve used the human-facing prices. If you ask an AI assistant about Scrunch’s pricing, double-check the answer.
10. Rankscale: best for flexible, wide coverage
Rankscale runs on credits rather than fixed prompt counts, covers more than ten engines (including Claude, DeepSeek, Grok and Mistral), and lets you schedule anywhere from hourly to monthly. Pro is $99/month ($84 yearly) with Looker Studio. Higher tiers add an API and white-label dashboards. A yearly-only Essentials plan starts at $17/month.
11. ZipTie: best for pay-per-use
ZipTie prices each prompt per engine per check, about a cent each, and never charges for seats, projects or competitors. A starter configuration is about $42.75/month. API and MCP access is a $10/month add-on. It also captures Google and Bing organic results alongside their AI answers.
12. Nightwatch: best for rank tracking plus AI tracking
Nightwatch bundles AI prompt tracking with a full rank tracker. Its Starter plan is €99/month (€79 yearly) for 50 prompts and 500 keywords, and every plan covers ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Mode and AI Overviews with unlimited seats. Prices are shown in euros only.
13. Goodie: best for a full optimisation programme
Goodie pairs tracking with optimisation actions, a content studio, revenue attribution and strategist support. Core is $399/month for 120 prompts across five models. Pro is $999/month. It’s priced for brands that want a programme rather than a dashboard.
14. AthenaHQ: best model coverage
AthenaHQ’s Starter plan ($295/month, $245 annual) covers 11 models, including Claude, Grok, DeepSeek, Meta AI and Mistral, with prompt-volume estimates and Shopify, Webflow, GA4 and Search Console integrations. It runs on credits, and multi-engine daily checks use them quickly. There’s a free tier with $25 of credit.
15. Writesonic: best for tracking plus content production
Writesonic now leads with AI-search visibility and bundles AI article writing and site audits. Starter is $99/month ($79 annual) for 50 prompts. The self-serve plans track only ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews; all eight platforms need Enterprise.
16. Surfer AI Tracker: best for Surfer users
Surfer’s tracking-only plan is $95/month ($82 yearly) for 50 daily prompts across five engines, with mention-gap and sentiment reporting next to Surfer’s content tools.
How to choose
- Check before you track. Run a free check first, such as the SEOButler check or a vendor trial. If you barely appear anywhere, your first problem isn’t measurement.
- Pick the engines that matter. For most businesses, that’s ChatGPT and Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode first, then Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot. Watch for engines sold as add-ons (Otterly, Peec) or reserved for enterprise tiers (Writesonic, Scrunch).
- Size your prompt list honestly. Write down the 25–100 questions your buyers actually ask, then compare plans on that number.
- Agencies: look for unlimited seats, client workspaces and white label (Peec, SE Ranking, Rankscale, Nightwatch, Profound’s agency plan).
- Data teams: look at API access early. It’s often locked to higher tiers. Otterly Standard, Ahrefs, ZipTie and SE Visible include it at a lower price.
- Decide who does the work. A tracker tells you where you stand. If you don’t have the time or team to act on it, a done-for-you service such as Pace Generative may be the better buy.
FAQ
- What is an AI visibility tool?
- It's software that asks AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews a set of questions (prompts) on a schedule, and records whether your brand is mentioned, whether your website is cited as a source, and how you compare with competitors.
- Is there a free AI visibility checker?
- Yes. The SEOButler AI Visibility Check is free and searches recorded ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews answers for your brand and website. Several paid trackers also offer free trials (Otterly, Peec AI, Profound, Rankscale and ZipTie offered 7 days on 7 October 2026), and AthenaHQ has a credit-limited free tier.
- What's the cheapest AI visibility tracker?
- On 7 October 2026, Otterly.AI started at $29/month ($25 billed annually) for 15 daily prompts, and Rankscale's yearly-only Essentials plan started at $17/month. ZipTie's usage-based pricing started at $42.75/month.
- How many prompts do I need to track?
- Enough to cover the questions real buyers ask. For most small businesses that's somewhere between 25 and 100 prompts across your main products, use cases and comparison questions. Entry plans range from 15 prompts (Otterly Lite) to 200 (SE Visible Basic).
- Why do AI visibility tools show different results?
- AI answers change from run to run and vary by engine, location, language and wording. Tools also collect differently: some query engines live through a browser interface, some use APIs, and some (like Ahrefs Brand Radar's index and the SEOButler check) search a database of previously recorded answers. Treat trends as more meaningful than any single result.
- Can a tool make ChatGPT recommend my brand?
- No tool can guarantee that. Trackers measure. Changing what AI says takes work on the sources AI relies on: your own pages, third-party coverage, reviews and comparison content. Some vendors and agencies, including Pace Generative, do that work for you.
